EWARK TOWN BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB
OCTOBER NEWSLETTER
Although that brief “Indian Summer” at the end of September did allow us to bowl a little longer, it is unfortunately now fast becoming a fading memory as Autumn cold and damp sweep in!
Normally we would be able to brighten things up with our Autumn Social but regrettably still can’t safely open the clubhouse. For all our many social members just a word to say, we haven’t forgotten you, and will do our best to get some kind of social programme going as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime, we are taking the opportunity to redecorate the club room and make it brighter for when we do return. Thanks go to Tony Murphy for undertaking this work.
We eventually managed to play three friendlies and thanks go to everyone who turned out. I understand they were all good games.
By now, either by post or email you should have received details of how to apply or make nominations for the committee. I know many maybe think committees aren’t their thing or are shy in coming forward. I really can’t stress strongly enough though how important this is. Without a strong committee all the background work in both bowling and social terms just won’t happen! Nominations agreed by the candidate and seconded should reach me by post or email by Sunday 25th October.
On a personal basis, I am moving out of the area and am therefore stepping down as both Chair and Secretary. Both these positions need to get filled and agreed at the AGM. This is a great club and it has been both a pleasure and a privilege to lead it although I could have wished for a slightly less difficult year!
Following the nominations process you will then get a chance to vote on the various proposals for the AGM on Sunday 22nd November or if you wish, join a zoom meeting of the AGM itself!
The September 100 Club monthly draw has now taken place.
The winning ticket was No. 51 held by Bill Irons and 2nd prize was won by ticket No. 94 held by Kevin Clayton. Congratulations to both of them. The next draw will be at the beginning of November.
Hoping you are all remain safe and well and still finding lots of things to keep occupied as the Covid restrictions tighten.

Kind regards
Jeff Thorpe - Chairman.

NEWARK TOWN BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB
SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER
As we enter September and we start to notice the days growing shorter why not take the chance to grab a final opportunity for a bit of social outdoor bowling. The good news is you still can! The green is closed from Saturday 19th September but until then you can still book for a roll up game by ringing Tony Murphy on 07702 307228.
Although regrettably we didn’t feel we could open safely to allow friendlies at home we have played three away games at Bottesford (twice) and Long Bennington organised by Tony. As well as providing a small amount of competitive bowling, a real side benefit was the fact that teams included a significant proportion of our newer members from this season as many of our regular bowlers were still isolating.
Our AGM was originally scheduled for about now and had to be postponed due to COVID. We had hoped that delaying would make it possible to proceed with a face to face meeting, but unfortunately, restrictions are still very much with us. The committee have therefore decided that this year’s AGM will have to be virtual and have set the date of Sunday 22nd November at 10.30 a.m.
I will communicate the detail of how you can participate in a separate communication in the next few days. Broadly this is likely to be a zoom meeting on the day and all members being given the chance to vote in advance by a combination of email and post if you don’t wish to “zoom”!
The first part of the process will be to receive nominations for next year’s committee and we need volunteers. So, if you are interested and want to know more, let me know, or talk to one of the current committee members.
The September 100 Club monthly draw has now taken place.
The winning ticket was No. 78 held by Brian Jex and 2nd prize was won by ticket No. 68 held by Brian Marsh. Congratulations to both of them. The next draw will be at the beginning of October.

Hoping you are all well and remain safe.

Kind regards

Jeff Thorpe - Chairman.

June Newsletter
As the lockdown is slowly being eased the club has responded and started a limited resumption of bowling from 1st June. We are being cautious in the first instance, and have followed guidelines from Bowls England to initially open one rink. Access is via a telephone booking system kindly being provided by our Club Captain, Tony Murphy, on 07702 307228. The club house, including the toilets, remain closed. Details of this have already been provided to bowling members via a special newsletter.
Social distancing requirements mean there remains little chance of any competitive bowling resuming this season and all league matches have been cancelled in the NDL and LCBC. I have no information on the TVL but can only assume this is the same. On a wider front it would seem that some clubs are not opening at all and some, like us, only opening for social bowling under strict rules.
The committee continues to meet “virtually” on a regular basis. They have made the decision that, looking ahead, it would be virtually impossible to hold a normal AGM on the 6th September as previously agreed. The meeting has therefore been postponed until later in the year when the situation in place then will be reviewed to consider the best course of action.

In the “100 club” the winners for May were No.62 Marie Calvert and No.76  Kevin Clayton.  Both winners have been notified & cheques arranged.
July is the last draw in the current club which runs for a year and we invite you to renew your annual “100 club” membership payment before July 12th please as the 1st draw of 2020-2021 is in August
The cost is £12 per number. Payment can be made, ideally by Bank Transfer to TSB Bank—Sort Code 30-95-88    A/C number 00988882 & in the reference box enter your name & 100 club payment. Alternatively, it can be posted to Brenda Wright,11 Marron Court, Fernwood, Newark NG243WT, or left in the Club post-box on the LEFT-HAND SIDE OF THE GATE.
IF you decide not to support the Club by re-joining please inform Brenda on
01636 708785   or 07806 755603 so that we can fill in the gaps with new members and maximise the benefit to the club in these trying financial times.

Good well wishes for a speedy  recovery have been sent on behalf of the Club to Marie Calvert who has had an accident, &  is in hospital.

Finally, some of you may know the club now has a flagpole! We therefore need a club flag. Let me, or anyone on the committee have your suggestions for a flag design. It must incorporate our full name “Newark Town Bowls & Social Club”.

Until next month, stay safe and if you do venture out for a practice, enjoy your bowling.

Kind regards
Jeff Thorpe – Chair
